Trivia Night: Because Your Brain Needs Exercise Too

Trivia (noun plural but singular or plural in construction): unimportant matters : trivial facts or details; also singular in construction : a quizzing game involving obscure facts. ---Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
I recently joined a college friend for trivia nights. A couple of years back, when Trivia Night was just starting out, I had been invited by Mae Ann, one of my best friends, to join them; but I never really had time and was only able to play the game once. When I came back to Cebu in June, Rey Angelo (trivia geek extraordinaire) messaged me on Facebook and asked whether I was interested in joining them for a game of trivia. Actually, if I remember correctly, invites had been coming my way since early this year. But you know me, I can't always get my act straight, so I was messed up all over and had so much on my hands that the idea of going to trivia night slipped from my mind.

It wasn't until a month ago, when I was unhealthily busy with poker, that I realized I should be doing something that I truly enjoy. Poker is fun, yes, but it's just not my "thing." So I finally decided to text Rey that I was going to join them for Trivia Night at Alejandro's. I became part of MON-MON-MON (the etiology of the team name I have no idea of!) I learned a lot that night and made new friends: Ram Mar, Richard, Mariel, Rey Doyee, and Doms. Most of them are from Bohol; Doms is from Leyte. Maayoha man!

My first Trivia Night "guesting" with MON-MON-MON.

And then, the madness.

Since then, I have been going to Trivia Night every Wednesday, and we added Mondays to our schedule too. We skip Thursdays at Emerald Isle for a couple of reasons: (a) it's far, (b) we don't think we'd fit in, and (c) we wouldn't want people to think we have no social life other than Trivia Night noh! Hahah! So far, in my month's playing, we've placed twice (3rd place, boo!) at the Sprockets Cafe and always, always are in 4th place---sometimes losing, painfully, by a single point!

First time to place 3rd.

I've successfully made him cross to the other side. :p

Going to Trivia Night has exercised my hibernating brain. TN is two-faced! Sometimes, the game makes me feel proud of myself; most of the time, it confirms my lack of taste for things that matter (e.g., classic literature, good movies, worthwhile music, etc.) But hey, why force myself to become someone I'm not? So what if I love pop music, modern-day, conventional literature, rom-coms and other nonsense movies? It makes me who I am, so I can't just shrug that off, you know.

A lot of my non-trivia friends have been asking, "What is Trivia Night?" Well, by the name itself, you should have figured that out, but I'll explain it anyway. There's this group of people from Cebu Trivia Night that go around town, hosting the game three times a week (schedule at end of post). Any team can join; there is no minimum or maximum number of people in a team. It's free. No registration needed. Just show up, order some food and drinks from the venue, and put your thinking caps on! Each team will be provided with a whiteboard and marker; this is where the answers will be written (DUH). For each game of trivia, there are 4 sets; in each set, there are 3 categories; and each category has approximately 8-10 questions. Sets 1, 2, and 4 are Q&A sets, which means that a host throws out questions, and the team would have to write down their answers on their respective whiteboards. Set 3 is made up of the visual categories. Images or clips are shown on the screen, and each team would have to give an answer related to the image, depending on what the Trivia Girls are looking for. All teams raise their boards at the same time, and points are given for every correct answer.

They were kind enough to make me use Penny & Me for the team name.

It's a simple game with not-so-simple questions! LOL. Trivia Night is guaranteed 100% fun, and it's good for your brain (bad for your heart though).

CTN goes by this tagline. And I LOVE IT!
So if you're in town for a week or two, don't forget to join Trivia Night. It happens on Mondays at the Sprockets Cafe, Wednesdays at the Alejandro's Filipino Restaurant, and Thursdays at the Emerald Isle Irish Bar. Visit Cebu Trivia Night's Facebook page! Click here.
